Pat McAfee's TST Team Battles ESPN Criticism

Chuckling and unfiltered, Pat McAfee, ex-NFL punter turned sports broadcasting phenom, has found himself in a bit of a spat with an ESPN announcer. Later this week, the $1 million glory of The Soccer Tournament (TST) will be within reach for McAfee's team, CONCAFA Soccer Club, as they face off in the finals against Bumpy Pitch FC. But before that, the founder of CONCAFA had a run-in with esports commentator Sebastian Salazar.

McAfee's TST squad, coached by none other than the legendary Zinedine Zidane, features an all-star lineup: former USMNT and MLS midfielder Brek Shea, ex-Premier League defender Geoff Cameron, and professional futsal player Zach Reget. In the semifinals, they took on Pumas de Alabama, with Salazar and fellow announcer Herculez Gomez providing commentary on ESPN+.

During the semifinal match, Salazar expressed frustration that McAfee, who was unable to attend due to WWE commitments, wasn’t present to support his squad. "We're hyping up Pat McAfee and he's not even here?" Salazar scoffed. McAfee, not one to back down, jumped to social media to fire back at the announcer. "TST Commentary talking s*** on me.. hope the CONCAFA squad s*** pumps this whole tournament," he wrote.

"Big man has some thin skin!" Salazar shot back. But not all was lost for McAfee. Scrolling through his feed, he spotted a fan who had mistakenly named Herculez Gomez as the WWE announcer, urging him to "tag" the sports pundit next time he'd criticize him. McAfee responded, "I had no idea what his name was... guy's a bum on the microphone."

Despite preparation for Monday's WWE Raw show in Phoenix, Arizona, McAfee took a moment to show his support for his CONCAFA players, who were beaten by Pumas de Alabama in the semifinals. "Heartbroken... Still incredibly proud of the boys. It was a great run," he wrote.

In the 2023 edition of TST, McAfee, who also served as a coach, made appearances on the field as a midfielder, earning him quite the reputation among fans and competitors alike[1]. McAfee's feisty spirit and love for the game have caught the attention of many, making him one of the most popular figures in the tournament's history.

Prepare for the grand finale as Concafa SC and Bumpy Pitch FC face off in the 2025 TST final, starting at 8:30pm Eastern Time on ESPN+. Catch all the action, drama, and, of course, those famous McAfee digs, as the teams compete for the ultimate prize and bragging rights.
