Mexico's flag football champions honored: Recap of Monday's morning event where Sheinbaum praised the two-time victors
In a series of events this week, President Claudia Sheinbaum has been making headlines for her criticism of Mexican newspapers and her congratulations to various sports teams.
During her Monday morning press conference, President Sheinbaum declined to comment on a question but took the opportunity to criticize Mexican newspapers for not reporting on the 13.4 million people lifted out of poverty during the 2018-24 presidency of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO). She singled out the newspaper Reforma for not reporting on the poverty data.
The president expressed her gratitude for "the support of the people" but felt that many Mexican newspapers were unable to bring themselves to publish stories on the reduction in poverty. This criticism comes after a poll conducted by QM Estudios in alliance with the Heraldo Media Group showed that President Sheinbaum has a 74% approval rating.
Meanwhile, President Sheinbaum also took time to celebrate the victory of the Mexican women's flag football team at the World Games in Chengdu, China, between August 7 and 17. The team, which defeated the United States in both gold-medal matches at the World Games in 2022 and 2023, has been a dominant force in international competitions. The sport, flag football, is a non-contact variant of American football played by women's teams in international competitions. It is similar to American football but instead of tackling, players pull flags from the ball carrier to stop play.
Unfortunately, tragedy struck over the weekend as eight community police officers were murdered in an ambush in Guerrero. The crime was discussed in the daily security cabinet meeting, but as of Monday afternoon, no arrests have been reported. The ambush occurred in an area where the criminal groups "Los Ardillos" and "Los Rusos" are reportedly engaged in a turf war.
President Sheinbaum also congratulated Mexican athletes who won medals over the weekend at the Junior Pan American Games in Asunción, Paraguay, and the Masters Indigenous Games in Ottawa, Canada.
In a surprising turn of events, President Sheinbaum mentioned a Wall Street Journal column titled "Don't Bomb Mexico, Mr. President", but she did not elaborate on her thoughts regarding the article.
Reforma reported on the reduction in poverty during the AMLO years, but it remains to be seen if other Mexican newspapers will follow suit in acknowledging the significant achievements of the current administration.
