Mexico reportedly extradited drug lord Caro Quintero at Trump's request, as detailed in Thursday's morning news.

President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed a crowd at a press conference on Thursday morning, reaffirming Mexico's commitment to the USMCA free trade pact and expressing her government's dedication to upholding principles of austerity, support for the poor, and zero corruption and impunity.

Sheinbaum stated that the extradition of notorious drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero to the United States, which occurred under Mexico's legal framework in early 2022, was a result of his involvement in serious crimes. She also confirmed that the USMCA would continue, despite recent doubts expressed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Trump has questioned the necessity of the USMCA and indicated a desire to 'renegotiate' the agreement rather than simply review it. However, Sheinbaum did not directly respond to the question about the need for Mexico and Canada to form a united front during the 2026 review of the USMCA.

Sheinbaum asserted that most people no longer pay attention to media outlets that are opposed to her government. She also emphasised that people now inform themselves in many different ways, and before the advent of social media, traditional media outlets had a significant influence on people's opinions.

In regards to the decision to send 28 cartel figures, including Caro Quintero, to the United States, Sheinbaum explained that the move was made by Mexico's National Public Security Council for national security reasons. The decision followed a request from the U.S. government, specifically from the Office of the Attorney General of the United States.

Sheinbaum also addressed the issue of corruption within the judicial system, stating that the corruption of the judicial power in Mexico is abnormal and offensive. This statement came a day after Security Minister Omar García Harfuch stated that there was a risk that some of the defendants could have been released from prison if they remained in Mexico.

In other news, a new poll has shown that Sheinbaum's approval rating stands at 72%. The president, who governs with the same principles as the transformation movement that took power in 2018, also asserted that former President López Obrador found a place in the hearts of the people of Mexico during his six-year term.

In conclusion, President Claudia Sheinbaum affirmed Mexico's commitment to the USMCA and reiterated her government's dedication to fighting corruption and upholding the principles of austerity, support for the poor, and zero corruption and impunity. The extradition of Caro Quintero to the United States, along with 28 other cartel figures, was a result of Mexico's legal framework and due to his involvement in serious crimes. The decision to send these individuals to the United States was made for national security reasons.
