In a surprising twist, Google finds itself in court over its GPS rebranding of the Gulf of Mexico. Mexico's President, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced the lawsuit during a recent press conference, stating that the legal action was already underway.

Sheinbaum blasted Google for ignoring the integrity of U.S. President Donald Trump's decree, which initiated the name change earlier this year. Sheinbaum argued that Trump's order only pertained to the U.S. continental shelf, not the entire Gulf. In essence, she maintained that the U.S. lacked the authority to rename the entire body of water.

Following Trump's decree, Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, updated its mapping service in February. As a result, US customers now see the "Gulf of America" label, while Mexican and international customers still view the Gulf of Mexico. Google justifies this practice as standard procedure for disputed place names.

Interestingly, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill for the name change last Thursday, albeit unlikely to pass the Senate. If passed, the bill would require U.S. federal agencies to adapt their documents and maps accordingly.
