Mexico Delivered Drug Lord Caro Quintero under Trump's Instructions: Thursday's Morning Recap

Mexico City, Mexico - Claudia Sheinbaum, the capital's governor, has been making headlines recently with her comments on various pressing matters, including the USMCA free trade pact, drug cartels, and the role of media in society.

In a recent statement, Sheinbaum asserted that most people no longer pay attention to certain television stations and media outlets opposed to her government. She added that people now inform themselves in many different ways, a shift from the days when traditional media outlets held significant influence over opinions.

Regarding the USMCA, Sheinbaum maintained that the agreement will continue despite tariffs on a range of products affecting Mexico's trade relationship with the United States. However, she did not directly respond to the question about forming a united front with Mexico and Canada during the USMCA review, as requested by a reporter.

A significant development in the ongoing fight against drug cartels occurred when Rafael Caro Quintero, a notorious drug lord convicted for the murder of United States DEA agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, was arrested in northern Mexico in 2022. The decision to extradite Caro Quintero and 28 other cartel members to the United States was made by a Mexican authority, though the exact agency or person is not specified. Sheinbaum stated that the decision was taken by Mexico's National Public Security Council for national security reasons and at the request of the United States government.

Sheinbaum also addressed the issue of corruption in the judicial power, stating that it is abnormal and offensive. She governs with the same principles as the transformation movement that won in 2018, emphasizing ideals such as austerity, support for the poor, and zero corruption and impunity.

In a social media post on Wednesday, former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi claimed that Mexico handed over Caro Quintero to the United States on the orders of U.S. President Donald Trump. However, she did not provide any official confirmation of this claim.

Sheinbaum's approval rating currently stands at 72%, according to recent polls, reflecting the support she has gained since taking office.

Caro Quintero was transferred to the United States along with 28 other cartel figures in February 2023, marking a significant step forward in the ongoing war against drug cartels. The USMCA free trade pact is scheduled for a 2026 review, and the question of whether Mexico and Canada should form a united front to strengthen their positions in trade negotiations during this review remains unanswered.
