Mexicans in Iran are being relocated to Mexico
In the heart of June 2025, a significant event unfolded as Mexico evacuated its citizens from Iran. The primary trigger for this evacuation was the escalating security situation following the Iran–Israel war, particularly the United States' air strikes on Iranian nuclear sites on June 22, 2025. These strikes intensified the conflict and increased risks for foreign nationals in the region.
The evacuation process involved coordinating special flights to extract Mexican citizens from Iran, mirroring similar efforts by other nations to safeguard their nationals during this chaotic period. Although specific details about Mexico's evacuation flights or diplomatic maneuvers remain undisclosed, footage and reports confirm that many foreign nationals, such as Pakistanis and Kashmiris, were evacuated through special planes during this time.
During such crises, Mexico's diplomatic missions typically provide consular support to their citizens. This support includes offering timely information and assistance for safe departure, coordinating with host and third countries to secure evacuation routes, and providing post-evacuation support to citizens relocated outside conflict zones. Although no direct mention of Mexico's official statements or consular activities in Iran in 2025 was found, such practices are standard in international crisis response, especially amid rapid escalations like the Iran–Israel conflict and associated U.S. military strikes.
As the situation remains volatile, the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE) continues to offer consular protection to fellow Mexicans in the Middle East. The SRE has also been assisting and coordinating with other Mexican embassies in the region, Jordan, and Egypt to verify the operational availability of overland departures from Israel.
The SRE has taken proactive measures to advise Mexicans not to travel to the Middle East. On June 17th, the SRE tweeted a message, providing information about departure options from Israel to the Mexican community and advising them not to travel to the Middle East. The SRE has also tweeted phone numbers of Mexican embassies in Iran, Lebanon, Egypt, Qatar, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan.
On June 18th, 2025, the SRE evacuated 18 Mexicans from Iran to Azerbaijan. Unfortunately, commercial flights remain closed from Israel, adding to the challenges faced during this crisis. The Mexican embassy is present in both Iran and Azerbaijan, ensuring continuous support for Mexican citizens in the region.
As the situation continues to evolve, the SRE maintains permanent communication with the Mexican community in Israel, providing them with the latest information about possible departure options. We urge all Mexicans to heed the advice of the SRE and exercise caution when making travel decisions to the Middle East.
