Mexican Driver Sergio Pérez Returns to Formula One with New Team

After a year away from the sport, Mexican driver Sergio "Checo" Pérez has officially announced his return to Formula One, signing a multi-year deal to drive for the new Cadillac F1 Team starting with the 2026 season.

The American entrant in Formula 1, Cadillac F1, will launch in the 2026 season with Pérez and former Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas as their driver lineup. The announcement was made publicly around late August 2025, with details confirming that Cadillac will debut as the 11th team on the F1 grid in 2026.

Pérez, who left Red Bull and Formula 1 at the end of the 2024 season, brings extensive F1 experience including race wins and recent years with Red Bull to the new team. Bottas, meanwhile, serves as Mercedes’ reserve driver in 2025 but has verbally agreed to join Cadillac next year.

As a brand-new team, Cadillac is expected to initially compete in the midfield or lower grid positions. Pérez’s prior experience in midfield teams and top teams is seen as valuable for development and leadership within Cadillac.

The official announcement of Pérez's signing with the Cadillac team will be made during the Italian Grand Prix weekend (September 5-7). The deal is multi-year, and both drivers were targeted early by Cadillac’s team management.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that Alpine is another team that could potentially sign Pérez for the 2026 Formula One season. However, the nature and progress of the talks between Pérez and Alpine are not yet clear, and no official announcement has been made.

The news about Pérez's return to Formula One was reported by PlanetF1.com.
