Mexican diver Osmar Olvera secures the 3m springboard gold at the World Aquatics Championships, dethroning China's reign.

In an unexpected turn of events at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, Mexican diver Osmar Olvera claimed the gold medal in the men's 3-meter springboard competition, breaking China's long-standing dominance in this event.

Olvera's emotional victory was met with cheers from Mexican fans who stayed up all night to support him, as he thanked them for their unwavering support despite the time difference with Singapore. The 28-year-old athlete asked for support from those who did not follow his performance, expressing his gratitude for the encouragement he received from his fans.

Throughout the competition, Olvera leaped ahead in the finals with the best dive in each of the first two rounds. His best dive of the final round, a forward 2 ½ somersault dive with three twists, performed in a pike position, earned him 97.50 points and secured his lead over the competition.

China, historically dominating the men's 3-meter springboard diving at the World Aquatics Championships, finished the competition with Wang Zongyuan taking third place with 515.55 points. Despite this rare interruption in their dominance, China still managed to win multiple golds in other events at the World Championships, showcasing their ongoing excellence in diving.

Olvera's gold medal marks a significant achievement in his career, as he has now won eight career Worlds medals, including four this year in Singapore. His victory also adds to Mexico's diving medal count, with the Mexican team clinching a total of six diving medals at the World Championships.

Following Olvera's triumphant performance, President Claudia Sheinbaum applauded his achievement during a daily morning press conference. Olvera's victory not only marks a historic moment for Mexico but also signals an emerging new challenger to China's dominance in the men's 3-meter springboard event.
