Mexican coach Gonzalo Pineda alleges unconventional tactics being applied to local coaches within Liga MX

In a candid conversation, Gonzalo Pineda, the former technical director of Atlanta United in the MLS, discussed the unique challenges and expectations faced by Mexican coaches in the Liga MX.

After three years with Atlanta United, Pineda was dismissed and found his first opportunity back in his home country with Atlas in December 2024. This marked his transition from the MLS to the Liga MX.

Pineda highlighted that Mexican coaches are often given the benefit of the doubt, but they are also expected to deliver better results. He believes that this is because Mexican coaches are judged differently in the Liga MX, with analyses of a team changing when the coach is Mexican compared to when they are foreign.

Pineda further explained that Mexican coaches are given more trust when they deliver similar results to their foreign counterparts. However, he also pointed out that young coaches in the Liga MX are expected to perform as if they had high investments, which can lead to challenges such as 'malinchismo' and short-lived projects.

In the Liga MX, Pineda faced these issues firsthand. He resigned from his position but does not feel like a victim. Instead, he believes that only results can change reality, and they need to deliver them.

Pineda's next engagement in Mexico was with C.D. Guadalajara, where he is hoping to make a significant impact and change the narrative for Mexican coaches in the Liga MX. Pineda concludes that for Mexican coaches to succeed, they need to be strong and deliver results.
