Mexican Boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Held in Custody
In a shocking turn of events, Julio César Chávez Jr., the renowned Mexican boxer and son of legendary boxer Julio César Chávez, was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on July 2, 2025, in Studio City, Los Angeles. Chávez Jr. is currently being processed for expedited removal and deportation to Mexico due to an active arrest warrant there related to organized crime and weapons trafficking charges.
The Mexican authorities have charged Chávez Jr. with involvement in organized crime specifically for clandestinely trafficking firearms, ammunition, cartridges, and explosives into Mexico, as well as manufacturing these weapons and explosives without permits. The arrest warrant was issued in 2023 by a district judge in Mexico.
In addition to the organized crime charges, U.S. officials stated that Chávez Jr. overstayed his visa and lied on a green card application. He has a history of legal troubles in the U.S., including a 2012 conviction for driving under the influence, resulting in jail time and probation, and a 2024 arrest in Los Angeles for illegal possession of assault weapons and firearm-related charges. Last year, he was charged with possession of two AR-style ghost rifles and associated gun crimes, leading to his release on bond and placement in a residential drug treatment facility.
The arrest came shortly after his recent high-profile fight against Jake Paul in Anaheim, California. U.S. officials have flagged Chávez Jr. as a public safety threat. Despite this, he was not considered an immigration enforcement priority until his arrest. His manager indicated they are currently addressing legal issues arising from the arrest but provided no further comments.
Upon deportation, Chávez Jr. will face organized crime charges in Mexico. The exact details of his alleged involvement in these activities remain unclear, but the arrest and impending deportation have sent shockwaves through the boxing community and beyond.
