The son of Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit, Marius Borg Høiby, is set to stand trial in mid-January 2026, following an investigation that has expanded with new charges. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

The trial, estimated to last about six weeks, will see Høiby answer to 32 charges, including rape, abuse in a close relationship, acts of violence, making death threats, and traffic violations.

Currently, Høiby is free pending trial as prosecutors have stated there are no grounds to detain him before the trial begins. No members of the royal family will be called to testify in the case.

The investigation has involved questioning some former guards at the Skaugum royal estate, who are expected to be witnesses. Høiby's defense team denies most of the accusations, particularly those relating to sexual abuse and violence, and he plans to give his version of events in court.

The royal palace has declined to comment beyond noting the matter is in the court's hands. The heir apparent of Norway, Crown Prince Haakon, did not directly address the Høiby scandal in any public statements. King Harald V, in his annual New Year's address, described 2024 as a difficult year for the royal family, without directly addressing the Høiby scandal.

However, Mette-Marit and King Harald V have acknowledged the burden the scandal has placed on the royal family. Mette-Marit stated that the investigation against Marius was hard for the royal family. The prosecutor Sturla Henriksbø emphasized that Høiby's relation to the royal family should not influence the trial's outcome.

It's important to note that Høiby is not an official member of the Norwegian royal house. His stepmother is Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, who recently moved to Sydney to study. Høiby's half-brother is Prince Sverre Magnus, who is 19 years old.

The upcoming trial of Marius Borg Høiby, scheduled for mid-January 2026, will delve into charges beyond those initially reported, encompassing sections of general-news, crime-and-justice, and politics, given the defendant's relationship with the Norwegian royal family. The complex case, involving 32 charges, spans allegations of rape, abuse in a close relationship, acts of violence, making death threats, and traffic violations, with significant implications if convicted.
