Mets victory fueled by Alonso's two home runs, including a franchise-leading 253rd, over Braves 13-5
Mets Break Franchise Home Run Record in Dominant Win Over Braves
The New York Mets made history on Wednesday night, setting a new franchise record for home runs in a single game and snapping a seven-game skid with a resounding 13-5 victory over the Atlanta Braves.
In the heart of the action was Pete Alonso, who broke the Mets' home run record with his 253rd career homer, surpassing Darryl Strawberry's record set in 1988. Alonso's impressive performance included two home runs in the game, setting a new franchise record for career two-homer games (25).
David Peterson, scheduled to start for the Mets, pitched effectively, improving his record to 7-5 with a 2.98 ERA. His counterpart, Carlos Carrasco, who is also scheduled to start for the Braves in the same game, currently has a win-loss record of 2-2 and an ERA of 6.18.
The Mets got off to a strong start, tying the mark for a single game in the expansion era by hitting all six of their homers with two outs. Brett Baty, Francisco Alvarez, and Brandon Nimmo all contributed to the home run barrage. Nimmo's three-run homer in the fourth inning helped the Mets to a tiebreaking lead.
Gregory Soto came in for relief and secured the win with four outs, while Justin Hagenman worked four hitless innings for his first save.
Looking at the top 10 players in Mets history with the most home runs, Alonso now leads the pack with 253 homers, followed by Darryl Strawberry with 252, David Wright with 242, Mike Piazza with 220, and Howard Johnson with 192.
Brandon Nimmo, who also homered in the game, currently sits at 130 home runs, while Francisco Alvarez, who homered twice, is quickly climbing the ranks with an impressive start to his career.
This thrilling win was a much-needed boost for the Mets, who had been struggling in their previous games. As they prepare to face the Braves again, they will look to carry this momentum forward.
