New York Mets Bolster Bullpen with Acquisition of All-Star Reliever Ryan Helsley

The New York Mets have strengthened their bullpen with the addition of All-Star reliever Ryan Helsley, who was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in a trade earlier this week.

Helsley, a 31-year-old flamethrower, has spent his entire seven-year MLB career with the Cardinals. He has been a standout player, posting a 2.67 ERA across 299.2 innings pitched, with 105 saves, 355 strikeouts, and a strikeout rate of 10.7 K/9. Helsley's impressive performance earned him All-Star selections in 2022 and 2024, an All-MLB First Team nod in 2024, and the National League Reliever of the Year award in 2024.

Last season, Helsley led the majors with 49 saves and finished 62 games, establishing himself as one of the premier closers in the league. In the 2025 season before his trade, he posted a 3.00 ERA with 21 saves and 41 strikeouts in 36 innings for the Cardinals. Helsley ranks sixth in saves in Cardinals franchise history with 105 saves.

Helsley's debut at Citi Field was nothing short of spectacular. On Friday, he twirled a scoreless ninth inning with three strikeouts, using his 101 mph fastball to dominate the opposition. His entrance at Citi Field included "Hells Bells" by AC/DC and stadium lights flashing, providing a fitting introduction for the electric reliever.

It seems Edwin Diaz, the current electric bullpen entrance star at Citi Field, now has some competition.

It's important to note that the Mets did not acquire standout reliever Tyler Rogers in a separate trade with the Giants. The trade involving Helsley did not include infield prospect Jesus Baez, right-handed pitching prospects Nate Dohm, or Frank Elissalt.

Ryan Helsley's acquisition by the Mets aims to boost their chances in the NL East, providing a significant boost to their bullpen. With his impressive track record and electric pitching, Helsley is poised to make a significant impact in the Big Apple.
