In a disappointing outing for the New York Mets, they fell 7-1 to the San Diego Padres on Friday night. Sean Manaea pitched five strong, one-run innings for the Mets but was unable to continue beyond the fifth.

Manaea retired 12 straight batters before leaving the game, with his only blemish being a go-ahead RBI triple to Jackson Merrill in the sixth inning, allowed by Jose Buttó. The Mets' offense, which has struggled recently, failed to capitalize on Manaea's strong performance. None of the Mets' hits came with runners in scoring position.

In a rare Mets threat in the fifth inning, Brett Baty walked, Luis Torrens had a single, and Brandon Nimmo walked to load the bases. However, Tyrone Taylor was pinch-hit by Starling Marte, who sent a sacrifice fly to center for the Mets' only run of the game.

Manny Machado had a standout performance for the Padres, hitting a three-run home run in the seventh inning, contributing to their five-run inning. The Mets' offense, which has been struggling, was unable to respond, with Brandon Nimmo (0-for-3 with a walk), Francisco Lindor (0-for-4 with three strikeouts), and Pete Alonso (0-for-3 with a walk) all having poor performances.

Juan Soto, who has played in 107 of 108 games this season, exited the game due to a left foot contusion caused by a foul ball. Soto's replacement in the game was not specified.

Jose Iglesias, the beloved former Met, had a strong game with several impressive defensive plays at third base. Iglesias recorded all three outs in the second inning, including a nice play on an Alonso ground ball and robbing Mark Vientos with a diving stab.

Ryan Bergert and five Padres pitchers combined to limit the Mets to four hits. The game was soon out of hand after Manaea was pulled, with the Padres scoring five runs in the seventh inning against Buttó and Chris Devenski.

The Mets will look to bounce back in the second game of the series on Saturday.
