Mets squander opportunities, ultimately losing a thrilling game against Guardians, 7-6, in extra innings.

The Mets suffered a heartbreaking 7-6 loss to the Cleveland Guardians on Monday night at Citi Field, a defeat largely attributed to a crucial throwing error by Mets' third baseman Brett Baty in the 10th inning.

The game had started promisingly for the Mets, with starter Slade Cecconi allowing only three hits across the first four innings. However, the Guardians began to mount a comeback in the 6th inning, with Steven Kwan and Angel Martinez reaching base against Sean Manaea, followed by back-to-back singles from David Fry and Carlos Santana, which saw two runs being scored. Gabriel Arias added an insurance run for the Guardians with a sacrifice fly.

The Guardians extended their lead further in the same inning, as Carlos Arias hit a home run, making the score 5-0. But the Mets refused to give up, with Pete Alonso driving in the Mets' first four runs, including a three-run home run in the bottom of the 6th inning. Alonso's home run brought him within one of tying Darryl Strawberry's franchise career home run record of 252.

The Mets had a runner on second base and intentionally walked Jose Ramirez, but Edwin Diaz worked his way out of a no-out jam in the game. The score remained 5-4 in favour of the Guardians until the top of the 10th inning.

With runners on first and second in the 10th, David Fry laid down a sacrifice bunt. Baty charged to field it, but his throw to second base was errant, sailing past Francisco Lindor. This error let both runners advance, putting the Mets in a vulnerable position that the Guardians capitalized on to secure the win.

Although the Mets' bullpen held the Guardians scoreless over the remaining innings, and Pete Alonso had an impressive offensive performance (4-for-5 with a home run and 4 RBIs), Brett Baty's throwing error overshadowed these efforts and sealed the team's fate.

The Mets' loss marked their sixth in the last seven games, a disappointing stretch for the team. The defeat was a bitter pill to swallow, especially given the team's valiant comeback effort, but the Mets will look to regroup and bounce back in their next game.

In the tense game against the Cleveland Guardians, the Mets' third baseman Brett Baty's error in the 10th inning, resulting from a misthrown ball while attempting to retire David Fry on a sacrifice bunt, significantly contributed to the team's 7-6 loss. Despite a strong showing by Pete Alonso, who hit a home run and drove in four runs, his efforts were overshadowed by the MLB game's decisive baseball play.
