Mets shake up coaching staff as Edwin Díaz rejects $19.65M offer

The New York Mets have made several coaching changes and are preparing for potential roster adjustments. Edwin Díaz, their star closer, has declined a news offer, opening the door to free agency. Meanwhile, the team has hired new coaches and made strategic additions to their coach outlet.

The Mets have offered Díaz a one-year contract worth $19.65 million, but he plans to reject it. This move allows Díaz to test the free agency market. The Mets, however, remain confident in re-signing him due to their faith in him and the lack of internal bullpen alternatives.

The team has appointed Justin Willard as their new pitching coach, replacing Jeremy Hefner who served in the role since December 2019. Jeff Albert and Troy Snitker will lead the hitting department, with Albert as the director and Snitker as a coach. Kai Correa joins as the bench coach, working under returning manager Carlos Mendoza. Tim Leiper takes over as the third base coach, replacing Mike Sarbaugh.

In roster moves, the Mets have claimed lefty José Castillo and utilityman Ji Hwan Bae off waivers. If Díaz leaves, the Mets will receive a compensatory pick after the fourth round in next year's draft, but they currently lack a ready-made replacement for Díaz in their bullpen.

The Mets' offseason is shaping up with new coaching appointments and roster additions. Díaz's decision to decline the news offer leaves the door open for his potential return or a draft pick if he signs elsewhere. The team's bullpen situation will be a key focus as they prepare for the upcoming season.
