Mets roster pressure mounts as Ronny Mauricio delivers game-winning homer during standout performance

Revised Article:

Ronny Mauricio ain't sweatin' the impending roster crunch. Not when Mark Vientos is expected to bounce back from his strained hammy as early as Thursday and might be back in action by Friday. But before the Mets need to make a call on him, Mauricio delivered one heck of a farewell performance against the Braves at Citi Field.

He smashed his third home run of the season and snagged his first three-hit game career during the 7-3 win, showing off his prospect potential and lifting his average to a decent .224 after a dip to .171 last week.

"Results may not always be in your favor," Mauricio told The Post through an interpreter, "but focusing on your game plan usually gets the job done."

Previously, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns admitted they're asking a lot of Mauricio. After all, a torn ACL kept him out of the game in 2024, and he only managed minimal at-bats in the minors this year. But Mauricio's strengths - his ability to rake the ball hard and play multiple positions - were clear, Stearns said.

Mauricio demonstrated all of that again on Wednesday when he played second base for the second consecutive game following three starts at third last week against the Braves. In the third inning, he launched a pitch from Didier Fuentes 378 feet over the right field fence and added a single and another base hit with an impressive 111.1 mph exit velocity in the eighth. Mendoza praised Mauricio for his solid, balanced swings and use of the entire field.

"Haven't spent much time with him, but Mauricio's handling the adversity in the Majors like a champ," Mendoza said, "considering everything he's been through."

Still, it might be game over for Mauricio. His mixed results could be too shaky to justify a roster spot after Vientos returns. That means Mauricio or another player could be on their way to Syracuse, given infielder Luisangel Acuña and catcher Francisco Alvarez's recent demotions.

But if Wednesday marked the end of this stint, Mauricio left the Mets with one final reminder of what he's capable of.

"I just want to see Mark come back healthy and help this team wherever he can," Mauricio said. "If the roster move comes to pass, well, that's the game. I just want to do whatever the team wants me to do."
