McLean's impact in the majors has been equally impressive. In 12.1 innings, he has posted a 2-0 record, a very low 1.46 ERA, and a WHIP of 0.81. He has recorded 15 strikeouts against only 4 walks, demonstrating good command and strikeout ability.
Over his last seven starts, McLean has been especially dominant, posting a 1.96 ERA with 26 strikeouts. Opponents have managed a paltry .565 OPS against him during this period, and his four-seam fastball, which averages in the mid-90s and can reach 98 mph, has been a formidable weapon.
McLean's calling card, however, is his devastating sweeper in the mid-80s. This pitch, combined with his solid control and effectiveness, has helped him maintain a 33.3% strikeout rate over his last seven starts.
Frankie Montas, who was previously starting for the Mets, has been demoted to the bullpen after a disastrous eight-game debut with a 6.36 ERA. The Mets are hoping McLean can provide a boost to a struggling rotation over the last two months.
Mendoza expresses the expectation for McLean to help the team win games. He stated, "We feel good with him going out there and giving us a chance to win baseball games." The Mets' faith in McLean is further underscored by his ranking as the Mets' No. 3 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline.
McLean's progression through the minors, where he showed consistent walk rates and ability to maintain control, has translated effectively as he rose to the major leagues in 2025. The Mets are counting on McLean's contribution to steer their season towards success.
On Saturday, the Mets called up McLean from Triple-A Syracuse to start against the Seattle Mariners. The stage is set for McLean to continue his impressive form and help the Mets in their quest for victories.
