Give it a whirl

The Mets' typically robust pitching squad appears to be faltering, with an offense that's been on a seesaw for fluctuating results.

For two months, through a blend of hot and cold offensive performances, the Mets have leaned on an extended group of starters, who've been showing an unexpected resilience. They've not just been sturdy, but deep, effectively absorbing big blows and bouncing right back.

But in the last few days, the Mets have encountered a few setbacks:

  1. Kodai Senga's injurey: The Japanese sensation suffered a hamstring strain and is expected to be on the sidelines for at least a month.
  2. Montas' questionable return: While Montas could potentially step in, his performance during his rehab starts leaves questions about his guaranteed spot in the rotation. Friday's appearance was particularly disappointing.
  3. Megill's struggles: On Saturday, Megill faced issues against the Rays, leading to an 8-4 loss for the Mets. The No. 5 starter continued his recent struggles, allowing six runs in 3.2 innings.

The Mets (45-26) have won six consecutive series, but their latest loss to Tampa Bay has ended that streak. Despite Megill's struggles, the Mets still don't need ace-like performances from him, but they do need improvements going forward.

"When I went to grab it, felt like it slipped right through my fingers," said Megill about an error that brought an inning to a frustrating end.

Since his strong start to the season, Megill has experienced a downturn in performance, giving up more runs and posting an ERA above 5.50 in his recent outings. Manager Carlos Mendoza noted issues with Megill's secondary pitches and control, describing some pitches as "non-competitive" and bouncing in the zone, allowing hitters to easily capitalize.

It is possible Montas eventually steps in for Megill, but the Mets are holding off on his return due to some struggles during rehab assignments. It is unclear when Montas will be ready to rejoin the rotation.

The loss of Senga has led to Paul Blackburn returning to the rotation, at least temporarily. What's next for the Mets' pitching staff?

Although this hiccup appears daunting, Carlos Mendoza remains optimistic, stating, "These kind of starts are going to happen."

The Mets' pitching squad, with the recent injury of Kodai Senga and struggles from Trevor Megill, might find solace in Major League Baseball (MLB) as they search for improved performances. With Montas' return uncertain due to his rehab struggles, the Mets could lean on baseball games to help stabilize their pitching rotation.
