Pete Alonso Breaks Mets Home Run Record

Pete Alonso, the New York Mets' slugger, made history on August 12, 2025, as he surpassed Darryl Strawberry's long-standing franchise record of 252 home runs. Alonso achieved this milestone in just 963 games, a significant improvement on Strawberry's 1,109 games.

In the third inning of the game against the Atlanta Braves, Alonso hit his 253rd home run, a powerful shot off starter Spencer Strider. Three innings later, Alonso smashed home run number 254 off reliever Austin Cox, a 405-foot shot to center field. The home run was his 27th of the current season.

Alonso's power-hitting ability is marked by remarkable consistency and early career success. In his rookie season of 2019, he set a Major League rookie record with 53 home runs, a mark that also remains the Mets' single-season record. From 2021 to 2024, Alonso maintained strong power numbers, hitting between 34 and 46 homers annually, for a total of 157 homers in that span.

Alonso's impressive performance extends beyond sheer volume. He is known for his clutch power hitting, as exemplified by his pivotal postseason home run in the 2024 Wild Card Series.

In the context of Mets history, Alonso now stands as the franchise's all-time home run leader. Comparatively, his home run totals are remarkable for his career length and age (30 years old as of 2025). His early power aligns him with some of the greatest sluggers in MLB history who had multiple 40+ home run seasons in their first five years.

Alonso's achievements are further reinforced by his success in the Home Run Derby and multiple All-Star appearances, solidifying his standing as one of the premier sluggers in the league today. Despite some uncertainty about his future with the club during free agency, Alonso ultimately returned on a two-year deal, aiming to continue his streak of 30+ homer campaigns except for the shortened 2020 season where he hit 16 homers.

As Alonso continues to break records and dominate the home run charts, there's no doubt that he will go down as one of the greatest power hitters in Mets history.
