Mets News: Brazobán Heads to Triple-A, Winker Remains on IL

The New York Mets have made some changes to their bullpen as they continue their pursuit of a playoff spot.

Huascar Brazobán, who has been tied for the team lead in games pitched, has been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse. In his place, the Mets have recalled Rico Garcia, who has been impressive in his stints with the team.

Brazobán will be working on a more scripted throwing program with Syracuse, aiming to stretch out to "hopefully up to 40 pitches." The Mets are hopeful that this move will help Brazobán return stronger and lengthier later this summer.

In Brazobán's absence, the Mets have a new arm in Chris Devenski. The team needed a fresh arm, and Devenski fits the bill.

Meanwhile, Jonah Tong, currently with Triple-A Syracuse, continues to impress. Tong has pitched over 9 2/3 innings for the Mets without giving up a run, a testament to his potential.

Jesse Winker, who has been on the injured list due to back inflammation, is still not ready to return. Manager Carlos Mendoza stated that Winker is not doing much and is at least a few days away from resuming baseball activities. The Mets remain confident, however, that Winker will return at some point this season.

In other news, Jeff McNeil has been starting more games in center field. For the first time all season, McNeil started a third straight game in center field. The Mets have been cautious with McNeil earlier in the season, keeping his legs fresh as a natural infielder. However, McNeil is taking advantage of the beautiful weather and is being monitored closely as he increases his workload.

In terms of performance, Tylor Megill is set to throw a bullpen session that approximates multiple "innings" on Wednesday. If all goes well, Megill will then begin facing hitters. In his past 12 games, Brazobán did not record more than three outs, posting a 10.66 ERA in his past 14 games. On the other hand, Garcia has not allowed a run in 9 2/3 innings with the Mets, trying to carve out a more permanent role in the Mets' bullpen.

The Mets will continue to monitor their players closely as they push towards the playoffs. With the addition of Devenski and the development of Tong, the bullpen looks set for the future. The team will also be eagerly awaiting the return of Winker and Brazobán, who will bolster the lineup and the bullpen respectively.
