Metro Extension in Lucknow Given Approval at Total Cost of 5801 Crore
Lucknow Metro's Phase-1B: Boosting Connectivity, Sustainability, and Tourism
The Union Cabinet has given its approval for Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project, a significant advancement in the city's infrastructure development. This new East-West corridor, spanning approximately 11.165 km, will connect key zones from Charbagh to Vasant Kunj, extending Lucknow's active Metro rail network to 45 km upon operationalisation.
The new corridor is designed to seamlessly integrate the city's key zones, including commercial hubs such as Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj, and Chowk. By directly linking old Lucknow's cultural and commercial centers with emerging residential and commercial zones, Phase-1B facilitates increased tourism, local commerce, and improved healthcare accessibility.
Out of the 12 stations, 7 will be underground, covering congested old city areas like Charbagh, Aminabad, and Nawajganj, while 5 will be elevated, including stations like Thakurganj, Sarfarazganj, and Vasant Kunj.
The operationalisation of Phase-1B will not only improve public transportation in the oldest and most densely-populated areas of Lucknow but also connect major tourist attractions such as Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, Bhool Bhulaiya, Clock Tower, and Rumi Darwaza. Moreover, the new corridor will link culinary destinations in Lucknow, a city known for its rich and historic food culture.
Phase-1B will play a crucial role in shaping the city's development trajectory and sustainability. It aims to address key urban challenges and stimulate economic activity and tourism. The total cost of Phase-IB is Rs 5,801 crore.
The new corridor also integrates the King George's Medical University (Medical College) into the Metro network, enhancing healthcare accessibility for residents and visitors alike.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the Cabinet meeting that approved Phase-IB of the Lucknow Metro project. This project is a foundation for future expansion and promises to deliver environmental benefits, making it a step towards a greener and more connected Lucknow.
