Union Head of IG Metall Issues Alert Over Potential Government Collapse - Metalwork union leader issues caution on potential collapse of coalition formation

The looming government, according to IG-Metall's presidium, Christiane Benner, must face the economic challenges head-on. Businesses and individuals alike need long-term planning security.

Beyond that, achieving a united stance in economic and security policy at both national and international levels is crucial. Germany should stand as a strong voice within Europe, which in turn must speak with a united voice globally, Benner emphasizes.

It's also about preserving democracy and unity amidst polarization. CDU's leader, Friedrich Merz, must show his commitment to unifying the nation, a challenge in today's emotionally charged political climate, says Benner.

The plight of small and medium-sized industrial businesses is grimmer than ever. Many suppliers are teetering on bankruptcy, causing entire regional structures to crumble. The innovative supplier network that has made Germany a powerhouse could be at risk, warns Benner. Embroiled in economic uncertainty, many businesses find it hard to secure loans for future investments. The new government must act swiftly to address this issue, urges the trade union president.

The CDU is set to decide on the coalition contract with the SPD on Monday in a closed-door gathering. The CSU has already given its seal of approval to the contract. The SPD members, on the other hand, continue voting on the coalition contract until Tuesday. CDU leader Merz will then be elected as the new Chancellor on May 6 in the Bundestag.

The upcoming government has a steep hill to climb, particularly in terms of addressing the economic concerns of small and medium-sized businesses. The coalition agreement outlines several economic measures aimed at alleviating the pressure:

  1. Tax Reforms:
  2. Plans to cut corporate taxes from 2028, coupled with accelerated depreciation rules from 2025–2027.
  3. Reduced income tax for low- and middle-income earners by 2027.
  4. Regulatory Changes:
  5. Replacement of the German Supply Chain Act with the EU Supply Chain Directive.
  6. Priority on digitization and bureaucracy reduction across the board.
  7. Energy and Industrial Policy:
  8. Emphasis on climate-neutral industrial growth, but details remain scarce.

However, these proposals may not provide the immediate relief sought by struggling SMEs. The lack of short-term stimulus for industries facing high energy costs or decarbonization demands could potentially delay recovery. Moreover, the delayed corporate tax relief until 2028 might leave smaller firms exposed during the current economic crisis.

  1. For the new government to effectively address the economic uncertainties, particularly those faced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Germany, immediate action is crucial.
  2. Christiane Benner, IG-Metall's president, emphasizes the need for Germany to cooperate with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and Eastern Europe to present a united voice globally in economic and security policy.
  3. Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU, must demonstrate his commitment to unifying the nation amidst polarization, as called for by Benner.
  4. The forthcoming government should prioritize industrial growth while ensuring climate neutrality, but providing clear details and addressing the immediate needs of struggling SMEs should be vital components of such efforts.
