Metal union leader seeks exceptional parental leave allowance

In a recent statement, Jörg Hofmann, head of IG Metall, has expressed his views on the Greens' role in the automotive industry and their potential impact on extended lockdowns and childcare issues.

Hofmann has high expectations for the Greens, particularly in the automotive industry, should they form a government coalition next year. He believes that the sensitivity for the industry has grown among the Greens, but did not specify which state governments with Green participation he was referring to.

Hofmann is advocating for real special leave for parents if kindergartens and schools remain closed in January, as he believes the current support for affected persons due to childcare is insufficient. He also called for additional support for employees with children in case of an extended lockdown.

In a separate discussion, Hofmann criticised the need for the Greens to prove they can drive the energy transition and expand charging infrastructure more effectively. He did not specify what specific solutions he expects from the Greens regarding the energy transition and charging infrastructure.

The Green Party, however, has proposed an action plan for electromobility and support for renewable energy as a basis for energy transition and a strong domestic automotive industry. They aim to accelerate the expansion of charging infrastructure through faster planning and less bureaucracy, support technology openness in the automotive sector, and favour electric mobility as the future. They also emphasise concrete steps for regulatory relief and funding programs to promote ecological transformation in the industry.

It is not clear what the current political decision regarding loss of earnings compensation from the state under certain conditions for affected persons due to childcare is. Hofmann's comments come as concerns about the impact of extended lockdowns on families with children continue to grow.

As the next federal election approaches, the role of the Greens in addressing these challenges will undoubtedly be a topic of intense debate and discussion.
