Mesut Özil inaugurates upgraded Dhaka University medical centre on Turkey-funded visit
Former footballer Mesut Özil visited Dhaka University this week to open the newly renovated Shaheed Buddhijibi Mortuza Medical Centre. The event drew high-profile attendees, including Turkish officials and university leaders. The centre's upgrade, funded by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), aims to provide better healthcare for students and staff.
TIKA president Abdullah Eren joined the inauguration alongside DU vice-chancellor Niaz Ahmed Khan, university officials, and student representatives.
During the ceremony, Özil received a commemorative gift from the DU administration and student leaders. His visit included Turkish Ambassador Ramis Sen and Bilal Erdogan, son of Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
After the event, Özil travelled to Cox's Bazar. There, he will play a football match with Rohingya children and promote Turkish humanitarian work. The delegation also plans to share Iftar with refugees and tour Turkish-supported facilities in the camps.
The renovated medical centre will now serve Dhaka University's students and employees. Özil's visit highlights ongoing Turkish aid efforts in Bangladesh, particularly for Rohingya communities. His participation in local activities aims to raise awareness of the region's humanitarian needs.
