Message from Narva, Europe's Eastern Border: Insights for its Adjacent Nation
Estonia to Host New Frontex Regional Centre in Narva-Jõesuu
Estonia is set to establish a new operational centre for the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) in Narva-Jõesuu, a move aimed at strengthening the security of the EU's external border along its eastern frontier with Russia. The centre, planned to open around 2025, will serve as a regional training and operational hub, coordinating border surveillance in the Nordic and Baltic countries.
The decision to host this Frontex centre in Narva-Jõesuu is a demonstration of a shared European commitment to securing the EU’s external borders. It brings international expertise and additional resources to a strategically critical region. As Estonia's eastern border is also a border of the EU, the centre symbolizes joint responsibility and cooperation in managing border security and migration control.
The boat ride for interior ministers of neighbouring countries, led by Joosep Kaasik, the deputy secretary general for internal security at the Estonian Ministry of the Interior, was intended to demonstrate the location of the relocated Frontex regional centre C7. Narva-Joõesuu is now the new home of Frontex's regional centre C7, which coordinates the EU's external border control activities on the borders of eight countries.
In addition to the regional centre C7, Estonia is also seeking to host a Frontex regional training centre in Narva. This new training centre will further enhance European solidarity and contribute to the overall security of the EU's external border. Estonia's military and technological reinforcement efforts in the region, such as the development of autonomous patrol vessels and the establishment of a military campus in Narva to enhance rapid response capabilities, complement these efforts.
