Friedrich Merz and the West German Privilege of the Federal Chancellor - Merz’s Speech Exposes Germany’s Lingering East-West Economic Divide

Average incomes in eastern Germany remain 21% lower than in the west, according to the latest data. Homeownership rates are similarly unequal, with eastern households 24% less likely to own property. The wealth gap is even more pronounced: the median household wealth in the East stands at just one-third of that in the West.

The figures and statements underscore the persistent economic gap between eastern and western Germany. With disparities in income, wealth, and corporate representation remaining largely unchanged, the issue continues to challenge policymakers. Merz’s comments, while highlighting the problem, have also reignited debates about how such inequalities should be addressed in the economy.
