Merz's Cabinet Retreat Focuses on Modernization Agenda and Boosting National Mood

The cabinet retreat of Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his black-red coalition is underway in Berlin, with Culture State Minister Wolfram Weimer notably absent due to a family bereavement. The retreat, held at the Villa am Tegeler See, aims to foster a relaxed atmosphere while tackling serious issues.

The cabinet is set to launch a modernization agenda for the state and administration on the second day of the retreat. The goal is to reduce bureaucracy costs by a significant 25 percent, amounting to 16 billion euros. This ambitious plan comes amidst growing concerns about the negative mood in the country, which political opponents like the AfD are exploiting.

Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder, who has been actively outlining strategies related to Deutsche Bahn and railway modernization, was unexpectedly taken to hospital during the retreat due to a circulatory collapse. The cabinet, preferring to stay in Berlin for their retreats unlike the previous traffic light coalition, is aware of the need for a cultural change to create a sense of renewal. Chancellor Merz and his cabinet are troubled by the current mood in Germany and are seeking ways to generate a joy for change. They are also working on improving the mood within their own ranks after a rocky start. Merz and Klingbeil have previously criticized the negative mood and the AfD's exploitation of it.

The cabinet retreat continues, with the modernization agenda taking center stage. Despite the unexpected hospitalization of Transport Minister Schnieder, the cabinet remains committed to their plans. They aim to address the negative mood in the country and generate a sense of renewal, with a focus on reducing bureaucracy and fostering a cultural change.
