Merz takes a firm stance against all instances of anti-Semitism.
German Chancellor Vows to Combat Anti-Semitism at Synagogue Reopening
In a poignant ceremony, German Chancellor Friederich Mertz attended the reopening of the synagogue on Reichenbergstraße in Munich, a building that was destroyed by the Nazis 87 years ago.
During his emotionally charged speech, Mertz expressed his deep shame as Chancellor of Germany, as a German, and as a post-war generation child. He recalled the inhuman crimes committed by the Nazis against Jews and vowed to fight against all forms of old and new anti-Semitism in Germany on behalf of the entire government of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Mertz, who was raised under the motto 'Never Again', understood this phrase as a task, a duty, a promise. He emphasized this motto during his speech at the reopening ceremony, declaring that "Jewish life in Germany can one day exist without police protection."
The synagogue's restoration was made possible through the initiative of Rachel Salamander, a cultural historian who founded the organization "vereint für synagoge e.V." for the reconstruction of the synagogue building on Reichenbergstraße in Munich.
The reopening of the synagogue was attended by a number of dignitaries, including Mertz, who praised the efforts of Salamander and her team for their dedication to preserving Jewish history and culture in Germany.
Mertz's emotional speech was met with applause and tears from the audience. He admitted to being shaken by the new surge of anti-Semitism in Germany and vowed to continue fighting against it.
The reopening of the synagogue on Reichenbergstraße in Munich marks a significant step in the healing process for the Jewish community in Germany. It serves as a reminder of the atrocities of the past and a commitment to a future free from anti-Semitism.
