Ready to Talk, Putin Extends Olive Branch to Merz Amid Strained Germany-Russia Ties
Merz is being offered a conversation by Putin.
In a surprising move, Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his readiness for a conversation with Chancellor Friedrich Merz - if Merz reaches out for a dialogue. Speaking to news agencies at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Putin remained optimistic about the possibility of improving relations between Russia and Germany.
At the same time, Putin issued a stark warning regarding the potential supply of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. "The involvement of German soldiers in strikes against Russian territory using German weapons would result in severe consequences for our relationship," Putin asserted.
Taking part in the SPIEF, Putin shared his thoughts on a variety of topics, including geopolitics, economy, and regional conflicts. Here's a snapshot:
Bridging the Divide with Merz
Putin made his first public comments about Merz since he took Office in May. So far, the two leaders have not exchanged any contact, but Merz has repeatedly called for peace in Ukraine. In Russia, Merz's stance is seen as confrontational towards Moscow. Relations between the two nations remain fraught and are at an all-time low.
In response, Putin dismissed the notion of Germany acting as a mediator in the Ukraine conflict, arguing that Germany is not neutral. "Not only in Ukraine, but in Kursk - on Russian territory - were German weapons used," Putin stated.

Warning Against Taurus Missiles to Ukraine
When asked about Taurus cruise missiles, Putin sounded a cautionary note, warning of possible German involvement in the war if Berlin chose to enable Ukraine's use of these weapons. Putin claimed that only German officers can guide the Taurus, suggesting that German troops may conduct strikes on Russian soil.
Despite this concern, Putin expressed confidence in Russia's military prowess, stating that the Russian army has strategic advantages along the entire front line and is making gains.
Politics Peace Talks on Hold: Putin Sets Conditions for Meeting with Zelensky
Once again, Putin outlined his prerequisites for meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, requirements unlikely to be met by Kyiv. According to Putin, he is willing to meet with anyone, including Zelensky, providing that the conditions for a ceasefire are met. Some observers interpret this as a hint that Zelensky would have to be removed to achieve those conditions.

The Future of Iran's Nuclear Program
Putin offered a proposal to secure the peaceful use of nuclear power by Iran, addressing Israeli concerns about an armed Iran. Putin stated that this solution could alleviate Israeli anxieties regarding Iran's nuclear capabilities if the respective governments in Jerusalem and Tehran were to agree to it. Putin does not foresee the Iranian regime collapsing due to Israeli air strikes.
