News Article: International Leaders Convene for Crisis Talks on Ukraine

High-level discussions are set to take place virtually, as world leaders gather to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The meeting, scheduled for this week, will involve the heads of state and government of Germany, France, Britain, Finland, Italy, Poland, and Ukraine, as well as EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, EU Council President António Costa, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and Trump's deputy JD Vance.

In a separate development, US President Donald Trump is due to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday to discuss an end to the war in Ukraine. However, Trump has reassured that he does not intend to reach an agreement with Putin on the Ukraine war.

The discussions will focus on finding a unified diplomatic approach to coordinate efforts, address security concerns, and assess humanitarian needs. Key agenda items include reaffirming support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, evaluating sanctions on Russia, and discussing frameworks for ceasefire or peace negotiations.

The Ukrainian government seeks Western security guarantees, including further arms deliveries and the stationing of a European troop contingent. In contrast, Moscow demands that Ukraine cede the four regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Saporischschja, and Cherson, which are partially occupied by Russian troops, as well as the Crimea annexed in 2014, as a precondition for a possible ceasefire.

European allies of Ukraine have called for the Ukraine and Europeans to be involved in the negotiations. Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz had previously emphasized that there should be no talks about the Ukraine without Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (Selenskyj). There is widespread concern in Europe that Washington could dictate unfavorable peace terms to Ukraine during the meeting in Alaska.

Chancellor Merz is also scheduled to meet with heads of state and government of leading European NATO countries, US President Donald Trump, and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy on Wednesday. The discussions will include further options to put pressure on Russia.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has warned against concessions to Putin and has demanded the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory. As of the latest updates, the outcomes or agreements resulting from these meetings have not been publicly disclosed. Official statements from Chancellor Merz’s office or participating governments will provide the most accurate and updated information as the situation develops.
