Merz sees Germany in deep upheaval - Merz champions Germany’s small businesses amid ‘profound transformation’ challenges

Chancellor Friedrich Merz has described Germany’s current challenges as a 'profound transformation'. Speaking at an event in Dortmund, he acknowledged major hurdles in the labour market, social security, and defence policy. His remarks came as he received a special honour from the baking trade.

Merz was awarded the Great Stutenkerl by the West German Bakers’ Guild Association. The prize recognises his long-standing support for craftsmanship and the baking industry. Borussia Dortmund president Hans-Joachim Watzke also praised Merz’s understanding of skilled trades, calling them vital to Germany’s economy.

During his speech, Merz stressed the importance of the Mittelstand—small and medium-sized businesses—as well as family-owned enterprises. He pointed to their role in shaping Germany’s economic culture. He also highlighted how immigration had contributed to the Ruhr region’s growth and success over decades. Despite the difficulties ahead, Merz warned against excessive pessimism. He reminded the audience that Germany had overcome serious crises in the past. Earlier, Watzke had called the chancellor’s job 'the toughest in the Federal Republic,' underscoring the weight of the responsibilities involved.

The award ceremony took place in Dortmund, where Merz reaffirmed his commitment to supporting trades and businesses. His comments on immigration, economic resilience, and defence policy framed Germany’s path forward. The Great Stutenkerl honour reflects his ongoing engagement with the country’s craft traditions.
