Playing for the youth team once more: Mertesacker returns against Hannover - Mertesacker returns to play for the youth team once more.

Catch a glimpse of football history in the making as Per Mertesacker, the 2014 World Cup champion, steps onto the pitch once more, this time for a beloved club that kickstarted his legendary career - the TSV Pattensen von 1890. The 40-year-old former professional will grace the turf in a friendly match against Hannover 96 on June 27, 6:00 PM sharp. The announcement was made via the club's Instagram account, with Neue Presse reporting the news first.

Mertesacker, a native of Hannover, embarked on his football adventure right here, under the watchful eyes of TSV Pattensen. He ascended the ranks, eventually joining Hannover 96 at the tender age of 11, before achieving professional and international acclaim with Werder, Arsenal, and the German national team.

With a twinkle in his eye, Mertesacker spoke to Bild about the sentimental significance of this final appearance. "I'm absolutely thrilled to lace up my boots again for the club that welcomed a 4-year-old wide-eyed kid. Playing for TSV Pattensen is a truly humbling experience," he shared. Despite his age, Mertesacker assures fans he's in good shape and plans to be part of the action for at least 30 minutes.

Although this comeback is not a prelude to a professional resurgence, Mertesacker has no intention of letting go just yet. "Playing on a regular basis is not in the cards for me, but I still have my membership with TSV Pattensen," he explained.
