In the heart of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, German athletes have been making their mark, particularly in the hammer throw and javelin events.

On the fourth day of the championships, hammer thrower Merlin Hummel secured a historic silver medal for Germany. His personal best throw of 82.77 meters during the competition was a testament to his skill and determination. This win ends a 16-year drought for Germany in men's hammer throw at World Athletics Championships, a drought that began after Karsten Kobs' victory in Seville, Spain, in 1999.

Hummel's silver medal comes after a near-miss at the European Championships in Rome last year, where he finished fourth. However, he demonstrated resilience and improved his performance in Tokyo, narrowly missing out on gold to Ethan Katzberg from Canada who won the gold with a throw of 84.70 meters.

Meanwhile, in the javelin throw, Julian Weber, the world number one with a season-best throw of 91.51 meters, is considered Germany's best gold medal chance in this event. Weber will compete on Wednesday, and his performance could potentially secure Germany's second gold medal at the championships.

The German decathletes also have a chance to win gold at the end of the World Championships, which run until Sunday. The success of Hummel and the potential success of Weber, along with Malaika Mihambo's silver medal in long jump and Amanal Petros' silver medal in marathon, have contributed to the German Athletics Federation winning a total of three medals at the World Championships in Tokyo.

The World Athletics Championships in Tokyo are the title fights for the 2021 season, and Germany's performance so far indicates a promising future for the country in international athletics. The win marks Hummel's biggest achievement in his career so far, but with Weber's upcoming competition, it seems that Germany's journey in Tokyo is far from over.
