Mercedes dominates 2026 F1 season with Antonelli's historic China win

Mercedes has continued its strong start to the 2026 Formula 1 season with a commanding double victory in China. Kimi Antonelli secured his first-ever win on March 15, leading teammate George Russell across the line. The result followed the team's earlier successes in Australia and the Shanghai Sprint. The 2026 championship opened with Mercedes locking out the top two positions in the first two races. Antonelli and Russell swapped places, with Antonelli taking victory in China. The team's superior pace and energy management strategy proved decisive in clear air conditions.

McLaren, meanwhile, faced early struggles. Oscar Piastri retired on the formation lap in Australia and missed the Chinese Grand Prix entirely due to a technical issue. Despite the setbacks, team principal Andrea Stella remains confident. He believes McLaren will soon return to competing for podiums and wins.

Antonelli's win in China has boosted his confidence. He now has a clearer understanding of his potential and what he can achieve. Looking ahead, he plans to maintain the same approach for the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka.

The upcoming race in Japan marks the final event before a lengthy break in the calendar. This follows the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix. Antonelli will carry his winning momentum into Suzuka, where he aims to replicate his Chinese success. The Japanese Grand Prix will be the last race before an extended pause in the season. Mercedes' early dominance suggests they will enter the break as strong championship contenders.
