Breaking Records and Claiming Victory: Team triumphs in Montreal
The silver arrows proudly displayed victory and double-podium glory at the Canadian Grand Prix!
Remember George Russell, a renowned racer, and Kimi Antonelli, a promising newcomer, brought home the win for their team with Russell securing first place and Antonelli clinching third.
This triumphant day marked the fourth win for Russell in Formula 1 and the astonishing debut of a podium finish for Antonelli, making him the youngest driver in Formula 1 history to achieve this remarkable accomplishment.
This breathtaking victory also marked Mercedes' impressive 130th Grand Prix win.
Beginning from pole position and fourth on the starting grid, Russell and Antonelli expertly navigated a two-stop strategy with medium, hard, and hard tires. They quickly ascended to their rightful positions, taking control from the opening lap. During this race, Antonelli skillfully overtook Oscar Piastri in Turn 3, asserting their formidable dominance.
With a strong performance, Russell masterfully maintained control over the race — managing his tires and pace effectively and maintaining a steady lead against Red Bull's Max Verstappen. Antonelli methodically followed, putting continuous pressure on Verstappen but just falling short of overtaking him for second place. He offered a valiant effort to claim the second spot during an overcut attempt but ultimately came up just short, finishing third.
Antonelli held back a charging Oscar Piastri's McLaren in the final stages before the race was concluded behind the safety car.
George Russell
I'm delighted to claim my first win of the season for our team! Despite the slightly elevated temperatures, we masterfully managed our tires and displayed the ideal pace to keep our pursuers at bay. Thanks to everyone in Brackley and Brixworth for their hard work. A also hearty congratulations to Kimi on his maiden podium, no doubt there are many more victories ahead!
We've been taking strides forward in recent races, and Montreal has historically treated us kindly. However, there's still plenty of work to be done to consistently compete for wins in every race. I can't wait to test our mettle again at the next race in Austria.
Kimi Antonelli
What a thrilling and nerve-wracking race! I'm incredibly proud to claim my first Formula 1 podium. Our success started with a strong initial positioning ahead of Piastri, displaying our prowess. While I never quite caught up to Verstappen, the final stint was intense, and I fought fiercely to defend against McLaren.
Incredible thanks to everyone in Brackley and Brixworth for their tireless efforts to enhance our car. It's fantastic that I could deliver this result and that we shared the podium. This is a memorable moment for me personally, and I'm excited to build on this success in the upcoming races.
Toto Wolff, Team Principal and CEO
The entire team, Russell and Antonelli, gave an exceptional performance today. Russell demonstrated a flawless race, governing the competition from start to finish without a single error, as he's known to do. Antonelli also delivered an outstanding race, demonstrating exceptional skill and unyielding determination. Against the championship leader, he defended fiercely and deserved his podium berth, no doubt there will be many more in the future.
We made significant progress this weekend, with temperatures reaching up to 50°C today. Our effective management of the tires, combined with our pace, proved unbeatable. We're well aware that we still have work to do to ensure consistent performance in every race. Our aim now is to maintain this momentum as we prepare for the upcoming races in Austria and Britain.
Andrew Shovlin, Trackside Engineering Director
Our first victory of the season and double podium this year is a fantastic reward for an outstanding weekend. Russell showcased perfect execution, never faltering from the front, while Antonelli claimed a landmark first Formula 1 podium against intense pressure from the championship leader.
After impressive long runs on Friday, we hoped we could match our competitors in race distance, and that's exactly what we did today. We remained competitive on both the medium and hard tires, outmaneuvering Red Bull and McLaren in key moments. This victory offered a tremendous opportunity to rebound after a challenging triple header, and it's a testament to the relentless efforts of our team at both factories to improve the car. Although we exploited track characteristics in our favor this weekend, we gained valuable insights, and we remain focused on identifying and addressing any weaknesses to continue challenging at the front.
Doriane Pin, Mercedes Junior - F1 Academy
This was an exceptional weekend for us here in Montreal. Totaling another podium finish is an exhilarating experience. Despite a difficult start in practice, we made impressive strides in qualifying and throughout the three races. Taking the lead once again feels wonderful. I'll be working tirelessly over the next few months to prepare myself for the final push at the remaining three race weekends and my pursuit of the title.
