Men cause 68% of serious traffic accidents in Hesse despite women gaining licenses

Germany’s roads reveal a troubling gap: as women earn more licenses, men still drive the deadliest crashes. Experts say risky behavior—speeding, tailgating—is to blame.

Men cause most traffic accidents in Hesse - Men cause 68% of serious traffic accidents in Hesse despite women gaining licenses

In Germany, women are making strides in obtaining driver's licenses, with 45 percent of newer holders being female. However, a stark contrast exists in road safety statistics. Men accounted for 68 percent of traffic accidents in Hesse in 2024 that resulted in injuries or fatalities.

This trend is not new. Since 1950, male road users have consistently been responsible for the majority of accidents in Hesse. In 2024, the most common causes of these accidents were insufficient following distance, failure to yield, and excessive speed, with men predominantly at fault.

Last year, a total of 25,000 people were injured and 198 lost their lives in traffic accidents in Hesse. Experts attribute this disparity to men driving more frequently and taking greater risks on the road, leading to their higher involvement in accidents.

While women are increasingly obtaining driver's licenses, the statistics highlight the need for men to reassess their driving behaviour. Authorities must focus on educating male drivers to reduce accidents caused by insufficient following distance, failure to yield, and excessive speed.
