Memorial music event taking place in Solingen, honoring victims of the recent attack
In Solingen, Germany, preparations are underway for a memorial event to commemorate the victims of the tragic terror attack that occurred during the city's festival in 2023.
The attack, claimed by the Islamic State (Daesh) group, resulted in three fatalities and left eight people injured. The perpetrator, a 26-year-old Syrian man, is currently on trial in Düsseldorf, accused of triple murder and ten counts of attempted murder.
The memorial event is scheduled to take place on the first anniversary of the attack, the 23rd of August, at the Fronhof, the location where the 2023 attack took place. The Fronhof was also part of the 2024 Solingen festival, hosting a wine festival. Thousands of people attended the 2024 Solingen festival, with several bands taking part who had been unable to perform in 2023 due to the festival's cancellation.
The traditional three-day Solingen festival was cancelled after the 2023 attack. However, in 2024, co-organiser Phillip Müller decided that they wouldn't let the attack stop them from celebrating freely in the city centre. He expressed gratitude to the Kotten Klub Bigband, who performed a "memorial concert" at the festival, for their contribution to the event.
Minister-President Hendrik Wüst (CDU) is expected to attend the memorial event, demonstrating the nation's solidarity with the city of Solingen. A musician from the Kotten Klub Bigband said, "We want to keep making music, not let fear keep us at home."
The 2024 Solingen terror attack was a tragic event that shook the city and the nation. However, the community's resilience and determination to remember the victims and celebrate their city are evident in the planned memorial event. As the first anniversary of the attack approaches, the people of Solingen continue to honour the victims and promote unity against hatred and terrorism.
