Hey there! Let's dive into the historical event that shook the heart of Germany six years ago.

On this somber anniversary, Hesse's Interior Minister, Roman Poseck (CDU), has urged a stand for freedom, diversity, and tolerance in remembrance of the assassinated Kassel government president, Walter Lübcke. At a significant event in Frankenberg, Hesse, Poseck highlighted the importance of active civic participation and the contributions made by individuals to society. Lübcke, a stalwart defender of democracy, gave his life for his unyielding principles. "He stood firm as a beacon of democracy in the face of adversity," Poseck shared, according to a statement.

Unfortunately, we've learned that hate and fear are the greatest threats to our democracy. Poseck underscored this notion, emphasizing the continued prevalence and dangers of right-wing extremism. The murder of Lübcke serves as a chilling reminder of the inhumanity and contempt exhibited by extremist ideologies.

To combat these divisive forces, we need to embrace the values Lübcke represented: freedom, courage, respect, initiative, diversity, and tolerance. The interior minister called for more of these values to counteract the darkness that threatens our peaceful coexistence.

The remembrance event was organized by the Frankenberg Cultural Circle in collaboration with the democracy initiative "Open to Diversity - Closed against Exclusion." The Westphalian State Theater from Castrop-Rauxel presented the play "One must stand up for values. The murder of Walter Lübcke."

In Kassel, the government presidency and the Evangelical Church of Kassel-Mitte held a public memorial service in the Kassel Martinskirche. Bishop Beate Hofmann paid tribute to Lübcke's dignified and inspiring fight for democracy, trust, and unity in her speech to an audience of around 250 people.

Lübcke, a CDU politician, was tragically shot dead on his terrace in Wolfhagen-Istha on the night of June 1, 2019, by the far-right extremist Stephan E., due to his progressive refugee policy stance. The perpetrator was sentenced to life in prison for his heinous act, marking a dark chapter in German history.

As we remember Lübcke, let us pledge to uphold the values he fought so valiantly to protect. #RememberWalterLübcke #StrengthInUnity #ToleranceMatters

  1. While we commemorate the sixth memorial of Walter Lübcke's tragic death, it's crucial to remember that hate and fear are not just threats to democracy, but also fuel wars and conflicts, as reflected in the broader context of general news and politics, including crime and justice.
  2. In light of Lübcke's assassination, the Commission might consider proposing to extend the period of validity of agreements aimed at combating right-wing extremism to cover the full duration of similar agreements, serving as a continued reminder of the importance of unity, diversity, and tolerance in a diverse society.
