Members urge public welfare consideration, clashing with National Guard, as CNTE educators take a stand
Teacher Protests Intensify Across Guerrero, Michoacán, and Chiapas
Yesterday, protests by educators escalated in several Mexican states, with disturbances reported in Guerrero, Michoacán, and Chiapas. The escalation involved clashes between dissenting teachers and police forces, as well as the burning of vehicles.
In Guerrero, members of the Guerrero State Coordinating Committee of Education Workers (Ceteg) faced off against the National Guard outside the District 07 offices of the National Institute of Elections (INE) in Chilpancingo. A contingent of Ceteg teachers arrived at the INE district offices, which were guarded by riot-equipped officers, in an attempt to force entry.
The standoff resulted in a confrontation, with Ceteg members employing sticks and tubes to break through the barriers set up by the officers. The confrontation subsided when National Guard soldiers deployed tear gas, sending a cloud of gas towards a nearby preparatory school. The panic-stricken students were immediately evacuated from the premises.
As a consequence, the teachers took control of the Sun Highway, effectively blocking traffic for over two hours. The Secretary of Education of Guerrero and the Undersecretary of Political and Social Development attempted to mediate, but were met with boos and further protests.
Walter Anorve, a Ceteg leader from Acapulco, announced that the union assembly would determine whether to boycott the upcoming judicial election.
Meanwhile, in Michoacán, teachers from Section 18 of the CNTE and normal students burned two delivery trucks and clashed with law enforcement. These protests aimed to demand the repeal of the ISSSTE and Career Magisterial laws, as well as the creation of new automatic positions and payments for temporary workers.
In Chiapas, teachers from Section 7 of the SNTE peacefully blockaded the central avenue of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, calling for resolutions to the ongoing issues surrounding the Savings Box and the Social Benefits Savings Fund of Section 7.
