Meißen launches its winter road service with upgraded fleet and 225 tons of salt

Meißen’s winter road service has officially begun, running from December 11, 2025, to March 13, 2026. The city has prepared a fleet of specialised vehicles, a large stockpile of de-icing materials, and a team of workers to keep roads, pavements, and public areas safe during the cold months. Property owners have also been reminded of their legal duties to clear snow and ice from outside their premises.

The city’s winter fleet includes five vehicles: two Unimog U319 trucks, two Multicar M31 units, and one Multicar M29 for clearing sidewalks, parks, bridges, and municipal land. A team of ten employees operates the mechanised equipment, while another eight handle manual snow removal. If extra support is needed, two local firms—Pflasterbau Mißbach and Melioration GmbH—can be called in to assist.

To tackle icy conditions, Meißen has stocked 225 metric tons of de-icing salt and 22 tons of ‘Ulopur’ grit, with a budget of €25,000 allocated for these materials. A new brine pump station, featuring a 30-cubic-meter saltwater tank, was also installed in early December at a cost of €55,000 (gross). Across the city, 99 grit bins are placed at 70 locations, and 775 meters of snow fencing have been set up in outlying areas, including Winkwitz.

Daily operations start at 4:00 AM, covering 172 kilometres of main and secondary roads, 9 kilometres of sidewalks, 34 pedestrian crossings, and 42 glass recycling sites. Until December 31, 2025, ST Grünbau GmbH will support winter maintenance, after which LUCIA GmbH takes over on January 1, 2026. Additionally, WISAG will manage 159 bus stops, the central bus station, and 3 kilometres of sidewalks and stairs from the start of 2026.

Property owners have been reminded of their obligations under the Street Cleaning Bylaw to clear snow and ice from pavements adjacent to their properties.

Meißen’s winter service runs until mid-March, with a mix of in-house teams and external contractors ensuring safe travel. The city’s investment in equipment, materials, and infrastructure aims to minimise disruptions from snow and ice. Residents and businesses must also play their part by keeping pavements clear in line with local regulations.
