Meghalaya braces for thunderstorms, heavy rain and hail until March 19
Severe weather warnings have been issued for parts of Meghalaya, with forecasts predicting thunderstorms, heavy rain, and hail from March 15 to March 19. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has alerted residents in West Jaintia Hills and East Jaintia Hills to brace for gusty winds, lightning, and possible disruption to daily life.
The IMD's warning for West Jaintia Hills outlines thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds of 40-50 kmph, and heavy rainfall on March 15. Hail is also expected in isolated areas. On March 16, conditions will remain severe, though winds may ease slightly to 30-40 kmph.
In response, the West Jaintia Hills District Administration has closed all schools, colleges, and educational institutions on March 16. Authorities have activated disaster management protocols, set up relief camps, and prepared emergency services. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during extreme weather. East Jaintia Hills has also issued a public advisory for the same period, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rain, and hail. Both districts urge people to follow safety guidelines and take precautions against potential hazards.
The weather alerts remain in effect until March 19, with local administrations monitoring conditions closely. Schools will stay shut on March 16, and emergency services are on standby to respond to any weather-related incidents.
