Meghalaya battles heavy rains and winds as IMD warnings prove accurate

Heavy winds and rainfall struck multiple regions in Meghalaya over the weekend, causing disruption in Shillong, Nongstoin, Tura, and Baghmara. Authorities have since issued warnings and mobilised resources to address the damage and support affected communities.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier forecast severe weather for East Khasi Hills between March 15 and 19. Thunderstorms, gusty winds, heavy downpours, and hail were expected during this period. Residents were advised to secure loose objects and unplug electrical devices to avoid lightning-related hazards.

In response to the damage, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma held a review meeting to assess the situation. He directed officials to monitor conditions closely, deliver immediate relief, and restore essential services. Additional personnel were deployed to help bring normalcy back to the impacted zones.

The IMD's March 16 press release confirmed isolated heavy rainfall over Meghalaya on March 16 and 17. However, it did not specify which districts would be most affected or provide further details on thunderstorms and strong winds.

Authorities continue to urge residents to stay alert during heavy rainfall due to the ongoing risk of flash floods. Relief operations are underway, with a focus on restoring utilities and ensuring safety across the affected areas. The situation remains under close observation by local officials.
