Front row seats to the digital age
Surprised? Shocked? Yeah, I was too.
Last Monday, a Friend Request from my old-school, never-touched-a-computer-in-his-life dad pops up on my screen. Turns out, he had joined the digital world through the social media giant, Facebook.
I mean, we're talking about a man who prefers a surveying rod over a computer mouse, who's spent his career as a backhoe operator, around grit and grime, not pixels and bytes.
But there he was, dipping his toes into the digital pool. I had to figure out his motive and how I felt about this new development.
Is he just trying to keep up with the grandkids or has some tech-savvy villain hacked his account? I'll find out.
Let's hope he doesn't get sucked into Zuckerberg's algorithms and becomes a mindless meme machine. Here's to keeping Dad authentic, dude.

Dad's social media debut had me ridiculously surprised, especially considering his line of work as an operator and his preference for traditional surveying tools.I bet Dad won't be one of those celebrities who gets caught up in the whirlwind of pop-culture that thrives on social media platforms like Facebook. He might just be ready to dip his toes into the social-media-led entertainment world, following the footsteps of many baby boomers who found themselves in the digital age, albeit a bit late.If he gets entangled in Zuckerberg's algorithms, who knows? Maybe he'll become a viral sensation, turning the tables and making me the shocked one this time.In fact, I should probably start a pool on how long he'll remain active on Facebook; I'd bet on a short span, considering his affinity for the real world over the digital one.
