Thailand and Cambodia Hold Key Border Meetings in Malaysia
Diplomatic efforts to resolve border disputes between Thailand and Cambodia have led to the commencement of important meetings this week. The General Border Committee (GBC) meetings, scheduled for August 7, 2025, are set to take place in Malaysia.
The Thai General Border Committee (GBC) Secretariat, a key negotiating and coordinating body for Thailand, has arrived in Malaysia for talks with the Cambodian side. The Secretariat, which includes representatives from various departments and military branches, manages the technical and procedural aspects of border negotiations. It prepares agreements reached at the secretary and official levels, coordinates review and approval processes domestically, and ensures coherence and enforcement of decisions on the ground.
Rear Admiral Surasant Kongsiri, spokesperson for the Ad Hoc Centre for the Thailand-Cambodia Border Situation, is a prominent figure within the Secretariat. He is responsible for reporting on the GBC talks' progress and status.
On the Cambodian side, General Tea Seiha, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, will lead the negotiations. The GBC meeting is a significant step towards maintaining peaceful relations between the two countries and is part of the ceasefire agreement, which was reached on July 28.
The Thai delegation for the GBC meeting will be led by General Nattaphon Narkphanit, Acting Minister of Defence. Preparations for the meeting began on Sunday evening, August 3, and will continue until Wednesday, August 6. The GBC meeting will take place amidst the involvement of international observers such as the US, China, and Malaysia.
These meetings in Malaysia aim to set the framework and agree on agenda items for the GBC meeting. The outcome of these discussions is expected to contribute to restoring peace and stability in the region and advancing negotiations towards a final peace agreement.
