Meeting with Putin personally has been promised
In a significant development, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have agreed to a bilateral meeting, according to the White House. The announcement was made by US President Donald Trump in a radio interview late Tuesday evening European time.
The meeting, which would be the first since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, is a result of the Washington Ukraine Summit. The discussions for a possible bilateral summit are underway, with the US playing a key role in arranging the talks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared his readiness for a conversation with Putin without preconditions after the Ukraine Summit. However, the Kremlin has been less clear, with Russian officials stating they are considering raising the level of dialogue but not yet confirming a meeting or its terms.
Yuri Ushakov, Putin's foreign policy advisor, suggested future high-level negotiations between Moscow and Kiev, but did not speak of a meeting of the heads of state. No official response has been received from the Kremlin regarding Zelensky's readiness for a conversation with Putin.
The US government is still working with Russia and Ukraine to make the bilateral meeting happen. No specific date or location has been officially confirmed yet for the planned meeting, pending further diplomatic progress and agreement on security conditions. Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt confirmed Putin's agreement to a meeting with reporters in Washington.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov of Russia stated that any contacts involving the heads of state must be prepared very carefully. Trump stated that he wants the killing to stop during the meeting. Zelensky has suggested that peace talks should continue without preconditions and focus on ending the war.
As of late August 2025, the time and place remain undecided and unannounced, pending further diplomatic progress and agreement on security conditions. The international community is closely watching this development, hoping for a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
