Meeting of Putin and Trump in Alaska: Officially confirmed details
The anticipated meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, scheduled for August 15 in Anchorage, Alaska, is set to focus on the resolution of the Ukrainian crisis. However, the latest update indicates that no direct talks between the two leaders regarding the Ukrainian crisis have materialized, despite early White House claims of preliminary agreements and a planned bilateral meeting.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has publicly downplayed the chances of such talks, emphasizing Russia's demand for a key role and veto power over Ukraine's future security arrangements. This stance signals Moscow's lack of interest in a lasting peace settlement.
President Trump had earlier expressed optimism about peace talks but recently stated that within about two weeks it would become clearer whether a deal could be reached; otherwise, alternative approaches would be considered. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accuses Russia of avoiding meaningful diplomatic engagement, describing Russian signals as "indecent" and highlighting ongoing intense Russian attacks, including missile strikes on civilian and American-owned targets in Ukraine.
In a divergence of approach, Trump suggested Ukraine might consider playing an offensive military role. This suggests a potential difference in strategy to end the conflict.
The meeting, which will commence at 11:30 local time, will involve Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Yuri Ushakov, Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, and the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, Kirill Dmitriyev. A program for the meeting has been agreed upon, including a tête-à-tête meeting and a meeting with delegations.
Following their talks, a joint press conference will be held by Putin and Trump. Despite the lack of direct talks on the Ukrainian crisis, the diplomatic efforts remain stalled amid continued military aggression and conflicting demands, with no concrete peace talks directly involving Putin and Trump currently underway.
