Meeting for the seventh time, leaders Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump set for another high-level discussion.
The much-anticipated meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Alaska took place on August 15. The central theme of the summit was the resolution of the Ukrainian crisis, with both leaders expressing optimism about the potential for peace talks.
Trump stated that he would call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after his talks with Putin, provided that the discussions went well. He also expressed confidence that his talks with Putin would serve as preparation for a second meeting, in which Zelensky would participate.
Putin, for his part, expressed a clear, distinct position on the matter, which he promised to present during the meeting. However, the meeting concluded without any ceasefire agreement or major breakthrough.
Experts suggested that Putin's approach might involve demands for significant territorial concessions in Ukraine, as part of his negotiation strategy. Trump, on the other hand, aimed to both reset political relations with Russia—offering prospects of trade and investment—and to seek an end to the conflict in Ukraine.
The meeting was part of Trump's broader attempt to negotiate an end to the war, though no ceasefire or peace deal was reached. After three and a half hours, the meeting ended without detailed joint statements or announcements, reflecting unresolved issues.
The absence of a war settlement stalled economic incentives discussions, as Putin brought a business delegation hoping to finalize deals on Russian investment in Alaskan oil and rare earth minerals. Trump has also indicated that he may impose restrictions on countries purchasing oil and gas from Russia.
The Russia-US summit on Alaska was a high-profile diplomatic effort with symbolic value, exploring possible paths to peace in Ukraine and economic cooperation. However, it ended without concrete agreements, underscoring the complexity and ongoing tensions in US-Russia-Ukraine relations.
In a joint statement published on August 9, leaders from the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Finland, and the President of the European Commission welcomed Trump's efforts to resolve the Ukrainian conflict and advocated for a combination of diplomacy, support for Ukraine, and pressure on Russia as the most effective approach to achieving peace.
The meeting was not the only high-level diplomatic event taking place. Russia-China talks at the highest level were held in Moscow, though details of these discussions remain unclear.
Negotiations between the two presidents are expected to be difficult, and even reaching a mutual understanding on the core conflict might not eliminate difficulties in discussing other agenda items. The conversation will begin at either 22:00 or 22:20 (Moscow time), with the leaders engaging in a tete-a-tete followed by a continuation of the meeting with delegations.
The EU has imposed 18 sanctions packages against Russia, and the presidents will make remarks before the meeting. The summit will be followed by negotiations over a working breakfast, beginning at 11:00-11:30 local time.
