First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Economy, Yuliya Sviridenko, expressed her heartfelt gratitude towards the hosts and drew attention to the unfortunate reality that their children are forced to learn about landmines in the 21st century. She wholeheartedly acclaims Croatia, with its demonstrated demining expertise, as the perfect hosts for this conference. For Ukraine's government, demining is slated to be a top priority in the coming years—key to making a mine-free land a reality—ensuring the safe return of Ukrainians.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmihal broadcasted a video address and disclosed some chilling statistics. He revealed that a whopping 30% of Ukraine's territory is covered in mines, that is, an eye-popping 174 thousand square meters, over three times the size of Croatia!

First name:

Over six million individuals are living with the grim risk of landmines, with 250 already dead and 500 succumbing to injuries. If left unattended, experts speculate that up to ten thousand people might suffer a similar fate. The World Bank chillingly predicts that demining will cost an eye-watering sum—over 37 billion dollars. Talk about breaking the bank!

The ongoing military demining operations are crucial to the active conflict zones, with the police taking over the operational demining tasks in the conflict-free regions. However, much to our dismay, humanitarian demining initiatives have not yet commenced.

Last name:

Interior Minister Ihor Klimenko, via a video call, emphasized the urgent need to clear the areas of mines and expressed his "we need your support" appeal to the international community. The highest concentration of demining efforts is occurring in Kherson, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, and Donetsk. In a bid to speed things up, demining experts are being trained at a rapid pace, with the aim of having 2,800 specialists working as soon as possible.

According to Božinović, Croatia has marked the starting gun for activities on both the European and international level to help Ukraine in their quest. This demanding, time-consuming task, as per Božinović, awaits us all.
