Meet Sandy Williams IV: Alexandria's Next Time & Place Artist

Alexandria's Office of the Arts is hosting a reception with Sandy Williams IV, an interdisciplinary artist and assistant professor at the University of Richmond. Williams has been selected to create the next Time & Place public art project, part of the city's commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

The event will take place on Oct. 7 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Williams, who holds degrees from the University of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University, will share examples of their past work and discuss their interest in the Time & Place project. Their art practice explores the vernacular of time across cultural landscapes and personal experiences.

Williams' work has been featured in prestigious publications such as The New York Times, New York Magazine, and The Washington Post. They are recipients of several fellowships, including the upcoming 2024 Joan Mitchell Fellowship. The City's Public Art Program invites an artist each year to create a visually compelling temporary public art piece that reflects on the anniversary.

The Time & Place project for 2026 will be a significant addition to Alexandria's commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Williams' unique perspective and artistic background promise a thought-provoking and visually striking installation. The reception on Oct. 7 offers an opportunity for the public to engage with the artist and learn more about their vision for the project.
